What is DIN?

DIN, or Directors Identification Number, is a unique identification number issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to individuals who wish to become directors of companies in India.

A DIN is an 8-digit unique number that legally allows a person to act as a director of a company. It is granted only once to an individual, and a person serving as a director in multiple companies does not need to obtain multiple DINs.

Rules for obtaining DIN:
– For new companies, the first three directors can apply for DIN only through the SPICe Plus Form.
– For existing companies, directors can apply for DIN only through the DIR-3 Form.
– In the case of existing companies, the applicant director must attach the signature of any existing company director where they wish to be added as a director.
For example, Mr. Manoj wants to apply for DIN to be a director in ABC company. Here, Mr. Manoj will require a board resolution from ABC company, along with the digital signature of any existing director of ABC company.

Validity of DIN:
Once a DIN is assigned to a director, it does not require reactivation or renewal and has lifetime validity. However, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs may deactivate or disqualify a director if they or the company are found to be in violation of any laws, guidelines, or notifications.
